Back Pain: How to get your quality of life back

Do you miss… playing with the kids, golfing, exercising, yoga, jogging, sleeping comfortably, gardening or working and want your quality of life back? Cox Decompression Therapy can make all these things possible once again!

Cox Decompression Therapy is a gentle, safe, nonsurgical procedure for the treatment of painful and disabling low back and neck disorders caused by disc herniations, disk bulges, degenerative disc disease, stenosis, sciatica and osteoarthritis of the spine. Cox Decompression Therapy works with the body’s natural design to aid it in healing properly. Not so long ago, surgery was the only option for correcting certain problems of the spine, sometimes with little success or with multiple invasive operations. A multicenter observational study of lumbar spine surgery revealed success rates at 12 months varied from 49 to 58 percent, depending on the measure used. Now there is a research-based alternative to surgery. Cox Decompression is a safe alternative to back surgery for those 95 percent of patients whose conditions did not demand surgical intervention.

The treatment is aimed at fixing the cause of the problem, not merely treating the symptoms, in order to restore a normal, healthy active lifestyle. During Cox Decompression Therapy, pressure is reduced inside the disc, which in turn allows fluid, nutrients and oxygen back into the disc. The reduction of the pressure inside allows the bulging or herniated disc to retract, relieving the pressure on the nerves to eliminate sciatica or numbness and tingling. The muscles around the spine are gently stretched, which helps restore normal alignment of the spine, causing a reduction of pain in the neck or back.

Discogenic pain is a major cause of low back pain, initiated by tears in the outer disc. The disc is a soft cartilage-like material that separates the spinal vertebra. These discs act as shock absorbers and are finished growing usually around 19 years of age. They then become avascular (do not receive a good blood supply). One of the reasons that discs cause so many problems is that they do not heal well without good blood supply and if a disc is injured, it continues to degenerate and does not heal properly. One of the amazing benefits of decompression is that it heightens the disk space, decreases pressure on the nerve and returns it to normal function.

A comparison study of Cox Decompression Therapy and medical conservative care in the form of physical therapy (active trunk exercises, stabilizing, flexibility exercises, modalities and cardiovascular training) was conducted. Findings from this study were presented at the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine conference. They showed that for chronic/severe, chronic/acute and radiculopathy (leg pain) patients, Cox Decompression Therapy did significantly better than physical therapy. Collaborators were researchers at the National University of Health Sciences in cooperation with the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine.
