MAYOR FINCH VISITS THE FREE METHODIST CHURCH IN FAIRFIELD

Pr. Sérgio Elias de Faria of Free Methodist Church and over 150 members of the church gathered on November 16 to host a service attended by Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch, who was presented with a plaque for his recognition of the dedication and contribution of the Brazilian community to the growth of the city.
Mayor Finch expressed his gratitude for the homage and said that he’ll keep the plaque in his office as a reminder of the communion between the Brazilian community and the City of Bridgeport.

Pr. Sérgio Elias de Faria da Igreja Metodista Livre e cerca de 150 congregados receberam no dia 16 de novembro a visita do Prefeito de Bridgeport, Bill Finch, o qual foi homenageado com uma placa por sua dedicação e reconhecimento à contribuição da comunidade brasileira para com o crescimento da cidade. Prefeito Finch expressou sua gratidão e disse que a placa ficará em seu escritório como uma lembrança da comunhão entre a comunidade brasileira e a cidade de Bridgeport.

FROM HIGH-SCHOOL DROPOUT TO
THE WCSU PRESIDENT’S AWARD

He overcame difficulties to get a college education. More than a financial hardship, David Strout could have found many reasons to give up on his quest for a college education at WestConn, from his academic difficulties in high school to his family’s financial problems, his mother’s illness and his need to find work to pay the bills. But Strout, of New Milford, is no quitter - and this year the university has recognized the WestConn senior for his determination, tenacity and perfect academic record as the recipient of the WCSU President’s Award. In May 2009, he expects to cap his journey at WestConn when he graduates with a bachelor’s degree in professional writing, with a creative writing option. Strout’s remarkable path to the President’s Award has an improbable beginning, when, after struggling in high school for a variety of reasons, he quit school in his junior year and found a full-time job in construction. A short time later, Strout took a General Educational Development (GED) test and passed with a nearly perfect score.
Then he thought about WestConn, where he filled out an application and handed in letters of recommendation. In light of his less-than-perfect academic career, Strout was offered a probationary semester, which didn’t offer financial aid. Rather than give up, Strout persisted to tell university officials that he would make an ideal student and was given a chance in the fall of 2005 as a full-time student. He earned a 4.0 grade-point average in his first semester.
But the struggles for Strout weren’t over. His mother suffered a series of layoffs from her professional jobs and then was diagnosed with cancer. Strout worked several jobs while attending classes to help her pay bills. In early 2006 his mom — his biggest supporter — became more ill and was in and out of the hospital a lot. She died that April.
Strout said he had two weeks to move out of the apartment he shared with his mother. He wound up sleeping on friends’ sofas and moving around a lot. He once again thought about quitting school to find a full-time job. After a brief extension on his final exams, Strout finished the spring semester before the fall semester started. Since then he has received full scholarships to attend school. Strout said his experience at WestConn has changed his life. He’s become a better writer and more informed about what’s going on in the world from Iraq to the rain forests of South America. And he’s met dedicated people who are “fun to be around and value the college experience.”

DA ESCOLA INCOMPLETA A UM PRÊMIO DA FACULDADE

Ele superou dificuldades para poder continuar seus estudos. Mais do que um problema financeiro, David Strout poderia ter usado milhares de razões para abandonar sua busca pela educação universitária na WestConn – das dificuldades acadêmicas na escola secundária aos problemas financeiros da família, a enfermidade da mãe e sua necessidade de trabalhar para arcar com as despesas da casa.
Todavia Strout, de New Milford, nunca desistiu – e este ano a universidade reconheceu este estudante senior da WestConn por sua determinação, tenacidade e perfeita pontuação premiando-o com o “WCSU President’s Award”. Em maio de 2009, ele espera concluir sua jornada na faculdade onde graduará no seu Curso Bacharelado em Letras – Habilitação em Redação com opção em redação criativa. O caminho marcante que Strout percorreu para alcançar o “President’s Award” teve um início improvável quando, após sofrer na escola secundária por uma série de razões, ele deixou a escola e foi trabalhar período integral no ramo de construção. Pouco tempo depois, Strout fez um curso intensivo para formar-se com uma nota perfeita. Ele pensou na universidade local, onde matriculou-se e entregou cartas de recomendação. Ele não conseguiu crédito estudantil. Mas não desistiu. Ele prometeu aos diretores da universidade que seria um estudante exemplar e em 2005 foi-lhe dada a oportunidade de estudar período integral. Mas seus desafios ainda não estavam superados. Sua mãe foi despedida de seus empregos e depois diagnosticada com câncer. Strout trabalhou em vários trabalhos, enquanto cursava a universidade, para pagar as despesas. Em 2006 – sua grande companheira –adoeceu ainda mais e era hospitalizada com freqüência. Ela faleceu em abril.
Strout teve apenas duas semanas para deixar o apartamento onde residia com sua mãe. Ele passou a dormir no sofá da casa de amigos e movia de um local ao outro. Ele pensou em abandonar os estudos novamente e trabalhar período integral. Após uma breve extensão das provas finais, Strout finalizou o curso antes do término do semestre e desde então recebeu bolsa de estudos para continuar a faculdade. Strout disse que sua experiência na WestConn mudou sua vida. Ele se tornou o melhor escritor e mais informado sobre o que está acontecendo no resto do mundo – do Iraque às florestas na América do Sul. E ele tem conhecido pessoas dedicadas que “são companhias agradáveis e valorizam a experiência da faculdade”.

Na terça-feira, 18 de novembro, Andrea Gartner, Diretora do Danbury CityCenter, reuniu um grupo de mulheres de diferentes setores empresariais, ativas e dedicadas tanto à vida profissional como política na cidade, para um almoço de agradecimento no Ridgewood Country Club. Gartner expressou sua admiração pela liderança, impacto e participação deste grupo na nossa comunidade.

KIWANIS CLUB’s NEW OFFICERS

The Kiwanis Club of Danbury outgoing president Matt Rose, and Past Lieutenant Governor Joan Maloney Boehm have installed the new officers for the 2008-2009 year. Taking the reins as president is Dinesh Rajagopalan, owner of the New Milford Tennis and Sports Club, who has set the priorities for his administration - to increase membership in the Danbury regional Kiwanis Club, and to continue to expand the organization’s presence in area high schools. The Kiwanis Club of Danbury is a service organization dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. They meet every Tuesday at 12:15 PM at Chucks Steak House in Danbury. Community members who are interested in membership are invited to attend their meetings.
