On September 21, the pride of being Brazilian was stamped on the face of each person who attended the fifth annual Brazilian flag-raising ceremony in Bridgeport. On a beautiful and perfect Sunday morning marking the last day of summer, residents gathered at the entrance to Bridgeport City Hall to celebrate the 186th anniversary of Brazil’s independence from Portugal. Sponsored and organized by Tribuna Newspaper, the event turned the Bridgeport City Hall Annex into a bright palette of yellow and green – the Brazilian colors. The annual flag-raising is a moment awaited by many Brazilian residents anxious to demonstrate their love and patriotism for their motherland. According to Celia Bacelar, Tribuna’s publisher, the idea of the event is to show U.S. American communities, “We Brazilians are very patriotic, and we respect our flag and traditions, as well as [those of] America, its flag and its people.”
This year, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal was honored for his commitment to the Brazilian community and his great respect and admiration for its members’ fortitude and hard work. Newly elected Mayor of Bridgeport, William Finch, was the host for the ceremony, emphasizing in his opening remarks the pleasure he feels to see how active and involved Bridgeport’s immigrants are within the local politics. Deputy Consul Marcus Paranaguá, who represented the Ambassador of Brazil in New York, José Alfredo Graça Lima, highlighted that the civic ceremony is an excellent exercise of patriotism that keeps traditions and respect for the country alive in the mind of every Brazilian.

Festa do Hasteamento da Bandeira em Bridgeport

No dia 21 de setembro, o orgulho de ser brasileiro estava estampando no rosto de cada uma das pessoas que participou da Quinta Cerimônia de Hasteamento da Bandeira do Brasil em Brigdeport. Em uma manhã de sol quente, digna do último dia de verão, vários moradores foram à prefeitura da cidade comemorar o aniversário de 186 anos da Independência do Brasil.
Promovido pelo Jornal Tribuna, o evento coloriu de verde e amarelo a entrada principal da Prefeitura Annex de Bridgeport. Na cidade este é um momento esperado por muitos residentes brasileiros anciosos para demonstrar o amor e patriotismo por sua nação. De acordo com Celia Bacelar, Publisher do Tribuna, “A idéia do evento é demonstrar à comunidade americana que nós brasileiros somos patriotas e respeitamos a nossa bandeira e nossas tradições, e dessa forma mostrá-los que respeitamos a América, sua bandeira e seu povo”.
Este ano foi feita uma homenagem especial ao Procurador-Geral do Estado, Richard Blumenthal, um homem que abraçou a comunidade brasileira com admiração e respeito pela força e pelo trabalho árduo dos brasileiros. O anfitrião da festa, novo prefeito eleito de Bridgeport, William Finch, abriu a cerimônia com grande entusiasmo, citando o prazer que sente em ver a participação ativa dos imigrantes na política local. Vice-Cônsul Marcus Paranaguá, que representou o Cônsul-Geral do Brasil em New York, Embaixador José Alfredo Graça Lima, salientou que a cerimônia cívica é um excelente exercício de patriotismo que mantem vivo na memória do imigrante brasileiro as tradições e o respeito pelo seu país.
