Drive gets kids ready to go back to school

They promote the concept that citizen participation is the heart of a healthy community. To resonate that essence, among many of the programs the Volunteer Center of United Way of Western Connecticut offers, on August 21 it orchestrated the annual Back to School Drive at Pembroke Elementary School in Danbury.

Among the citizens that made that campaign a successful initiative were employees at 27 local companies and individual community members. Thanks to their generosity, 325 Danbury students received a backpack full of grade-appropriate supplies to start the school year, as well as a gift certificate for clothing. The approximate value of sponsoring one child is $175; this year close to $56,000 worth of school supplies and clothing were donated.
