GSP: The End of an Era

December 13, 2013 was a Friday. A Friday where Georges St. Pierre announced that he was taking an indefinite leave of absence from the Ultimate Fighting Championship, thereby vacating the Welterweight Championship. That means that in March a new champion at 170 pounds will be crowned for the first time since December 2007.

Georges St. Pierre announced his leave of absence in a cloud of controversy and after lengthy discussions with UFC bosses Dana White, Frank Fertita and Lorenzo Fertita. The controversy came to a head with his last title defense against a hungry and hale Johnny Hendricks, who by nearly all accounts had won the fight except on the judges
