Halloween In Downtown

Alicia and I look forward to Halloween. Just because we haven’t been to a costume party in ages or don’t get many visitors on Halloween, doesn’t mean our excitement is any less than when we were young. We still carve a pumpkin and have candy at the ready.

We love driving by elaborately decorated houses, especially the ones on Deer Hill Avenue. A few of our favorite houses include a stately colonial where the front yard is transformed into a creepy graveyard or the new and incredibly fun “pirate house” near the end of the street. This well-known Halloween destination can see nearly 3,000 trick-or-treaters on that one night.

Another popular family-friendly tradition is Halloween on the Green, which this year is Saturday, October 31 from 2 to 4 pm. The first 500 costumed children get goodie bags, and there’s a costume contest with prizes for Most Original, Scariest, Cutest and Funniest. Plus, at 3:30pm, they do a costume parade with the all the children around town. Entertainment will include the Tooth Fairy, courtesy of Dental Associates of Connecticut, music by Summit Entertainment and a Danbury children’s favorite, the Traditional Children’s Games presented by the Portuguese Cultural Society. There are games and activities to enjoy too, like the “Guess the Weight & Win a Pumpkin” contest as well as a free photo booth sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank. You can find out more information about Halloween on the Green, by calling (203) 792 1711 or visiting

This year, grown-ups can get in on some Halloween fun downtown too, when the Rocky Horror Picture Show returns to the Palace Danbury on October 30 and 31 at 8pm. And yes, you’re encouraged to dress up as your favorite character, throw props during the film and yell lines of dialogue as part of the audience participation. Tickets cost $15 and prop packages cost $5. Get your tickets online at, by telephone at 203-794-9944 between 1- 5pm daily or at the box office starting one hour before show time.

Whatever your age, there’s no excuse not to have some fun this Halloween!
