“Today everyone is Irish,” said Mayor Mark Boughton on Thursday, March 17, alongside other dignitaries and members of the local community during the flag-raising ceremony in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.
The celebration kicked off with a mass at St. Peter Church on Main Street in Danbury, followed by the civic ceremony of the flag raising at City Hall. Attendees were invited to partake in a luncheon at The Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center (GDICC), where besides the traditional corned beef, cabbage and beer meal, they also enjoyed a dance performance by the Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance and traditional Irish favorites by Steve O’Tree.
The Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the globe observe St. Patrick’s Day. What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods and a whole lot of green. And Danbury was no exception!
