With lower gas prices, an improving economy and increased distracted driving, the National Safety Council says motor vehicle accidents between January and June of this year have increased 14 percent over the same period last year. The number of injuries and the costs associated with accidents also increased significantly, according to estimates from NSC. Ventura, Ribeiro & Smith, Danbury’s trusted personal injury firm, is here to provide you with some useful information that may help you should you find yourself in an accident.

Did you know that your medical bills related to a car accident can be paid in full even if you do not have health insurance coverage? Have you ever heard of medpay? Or medical payment coverage? Medical payments coverage, medpay, is an optional coverage in all motor vehicle insurance policies in the State of Connecticut. You can purchase this coverage in the following amounts: $1,000, $5,000, $10,000, $25,000 or even $50,000.

Medpay pays for medical bills when you are hurt in an accident or sustain an auto-related injury, regardless of who is found at fault. So, even if you have an accident where you go off the road and hit a tree, if you incur medical bills, your medpay would help cover said bills.

Medpay is primary, for car accident related treatment, over any health insurance coverage available to you.

Medpay applies to any and all persons in the car. Therefore, if there are three people in a car that has $1,000 medpay coverage, regardless of fault, each person in the car will be entitled to $1,000 in medpay coverage.

Additionally, medpay may help pay for:

  • Injuries you sustain as a pedestrian or bicyclist if you are hit by a car
  • Any necessary dental care as a result of a car accident

Benefits and restrictions of medpay coverage will differ among car insurance companies and each specific policy.

Medpay is also available on residential and commercial policies, and will be paid out whether or not your carrier accepts any liability for the injury/claim. Just as in a car accident, medpay on your property’s insurance will cover any medical bills incurred as a result of an injury any person may sustain while on your property, regardless of fault. The coverage you obtain is also per person.

Speak with your insurance agent about this to fully understand the details of the medpay coverage available, especially if you are not covered by any health insurance policies. Contact your insurance agent today to learn more about how medpay coverage can benefit you, anyone traveling in your car or anyone who comes onto your property. Your health is far too important!
