Brazilian Flag Raising Ceremonies

By Tribuna Staff

Following three centuries under Portuguese rule, the largest and most populous country

in South America became an independent nation on September 7, 1822.

Throughout the month, Brazilians all over the world will be celebrating the 187th anniversary of the Brazilian independence.

On Tuesday, September 8, pride will light up the face of every Brazilian who comes to celebrate the Tenth Brazilian Flag Raising Ceremony in Danbury. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the Danbury City Hall, located at 155 Deer Hill Road.Sponsored and organized by Tribuna Newspaper, the event aims to stir the patriotism within the hearts of Brazilians, so they may never forget their roots, even when they are far away from their motherland.

This tradition has been extended to the City of Bridgeport, where the event will be held on Sunday, September 20 at 10 a.m. at the City Hall Annex on 999 Broad Street.According to Celia Bacelar, Tribuna's publisher, the idea of the event is to show the local American communities, "We Brazilians are very patriotic and we respect our flag and traditions, as well as those of the United States of America -- its flag and its people."

The Danbury flag raising anticipates the attendance of Mayor Mark Boughton and members of the Common Council. In Bridgeport, Mayor William Finch will be joined by the new Consul-General of Brazil in New York, Ambassador Osmar Chohfi. Both events are open to the public. This special civic ceremony is an excellent exercise of patriotism and keeps tradition and respect for the homeland alive in the soul of every Brazilian. So invite friends and family, dress in the yellow and green of Brazil and come celebrate with us!
