Diwali celebration hosted by the India Association of Western Connecticut
Diwali is the festival of lights, during which Hindus, Jains and Sikhs illuminate their
homes brightly and come together to worship their Gods. On October 24, the India Association of Western Connecticut celebrated Diwali at the PAL center in Danbury.
The event was free of charge and open to the public. During the Diwali celebration, a pooja (ritual) was held to honor Goddess Lakshmi and God Ganesh. Following the pooja, children and adults of all ages took part in various dances, including Garba, Raas, Sanedo and Bhangra.
The dance floor was filled with dancers wearing colorful dresses called Chanya Cholis and Churidars, accompanied by wonderful live music and singing.
Those who did not dance were able to enjoy such a sight. In addition, the Indian refreshments pakoda and jalebi were served to all guests. Mayor Mark Boughton, and First Lady Phyllis Boughton and Common Council Member Mr. Shay Nagarseth accompanied the group in celebrating Diwali throughout the night. Everybody enjoyed the program and had a great time.
