Free tax preparation assistance available
VITA is a program that for several years has been helping residents from the Danbury area as well as from the rest of the state. The purpose of V.I.T.A is to help people of low income and resources to prepare their taxes. This prevents them from having to pay someone to do their taxes and they can then utilize that money to pay for bills and clothing for their families.
Last year, the program assisted more than 625 clients and brought a total of $667,000 to the local economy. The tax preparers for this program are volunteers and have been certified by the Internal Revenue Service.
This year, we have volunteers from different ethnic backgrounds that speak English, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese. We are looking forward to adding three more languages next year. If anyone is interested in volunteering for this program, please contact Gloria Sanchez at 203-798-2855 ext. 14 or John Fegley at 203-798-2855, ext. 17.
We have to thank our volunteers for doing such a great job – without them this program would not be possible – but foremost, we are gratetful to the Hispanic Center of Greater Danbury for opening its doors to such a great cause. The Center is located at 87 West Street in Danbury, CT.
This is our way of saying that we can all make a difference through voluntarism in an organization like the Hispanic Center – and have a positive impact upon our town, our state and our country.
