World Cup fans should obey laws during celebrations in Danbury

In anticipation of the rising excitement levels and growing number of celebrations for the 2010

World Cup, taking place through July 11h, the Danbury Police Department and Mayor Mark Boughton have requested that all soccer fans cooperate and comply with traffic and civil laws during all World Cup celebrations.

Impromptu parades that disrupt traffic flow provide challenges to City- Center residents and business owners.

“It is exciting to see many of our residents enjoying his quadrennial tournament, however, we all need to remember that celebrations that overflow into streets and public areas can disrupt traffic and everyday business. Soccer fans must show their love of the game while following the law – for everyone’s safety,” Mayor Boughton said. Chief Baker added, “Impromptu celebration parades have no organized leadership and create communication challenges as well as concerns for the quality of life and safety of our community. Motor vehicle laws, inclu-ding seat belts, intoxication, flags obstructing vehicle windows and people hanging out of vehicle windows, will be enforced during all impromptu celebrations.”

The Danbury Police Department will closely monitor traffic flows following soccer matches to minimize the impact of the celebrations. Egregious violators will be ticketed for violations, including Driving While Intoxicated, seat belt violations, open containers of alcohol in vehicles, excessive horn blowing, driver’s license and motor vehicle violations, overcrowding of vehicles and illegal riding.
Sincerely,
City of Danbury
Office of the Mayor
