Turning back the clock: Non-surgical facial rejuvination
The traditional a p - proach to improving the appearance of aging in the face has been surgery. Although there is still a role for surgery in making one look younger, there have been many advances in nonsurgical treatments for the face. A combination of these treatments can often delay or help avoid the need for surgery completely. There are two major categories of products that help restore a youthful appearance to the face. The first is Botox. Botox is a protein, which relaxes muscles. This liquid can be injected into wrinkles that are caused by overactive muscles in order to relax the area and erase its wrinkled appearance. This medicine can be injected during a short office visit in order to
improve the appearance of many areas –the forehead, eyebrows, eyelids, nose, mouth and neck. There are few risks and the results last 3-4 months.
The second category of products used to improve the appearance of the face consists of facial fillers. These materials are injected into wrinkles to elevate and soften the lines. There are a variety of products that can be used for this purpose, including Restylane, Juvaderm and Radiesse. Each product can be used in specific areas in a variety of ways. These fillers last up to 18 months. They can be used throughout the face, including around the lips, cheeks, nose, eyebrows and eyelids. There are few side effects from these injections and they have a high satisfaction rate.
A third category of treatment is chemical peels. These treatments are designed to remove surface blemishes from the skin, including pigmentation, scars, and fine lines. The peel usually involves a short office procedure performed with a topical anesthetic. The recovery time is 3-5 days and the results are long lasting. With proper skin preparation, side effects are minimal.
A combination of the above treatments can be used to eliminate many of the signs of aging that occur on the face.
