DANBURY
Great things are done by a group of teens
A dedication of the mural created by the Danbury Library Teen Council was held on Saturday, August 28 at noon in the Danbury Library Junior Department. From September 2009 to April 2010, twenty-four teens planned and created a 13-foot plywood work of art. The theme of the mural is based on the words of Vincent Van Gogh, “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” Katie Stevenson, a local artist, worked with the teens to put their ideas on paper and then transfer the images by using carbon paper.
Mrs. Stevenson taught the teens about using color and artistic techniques. The plywood mural framework was designed and constructed by Kenny Previtali, Ms. Stevenson’s husband.
The focus of the mural is a large tree with an altered book at the base that pictures a path into the world of books and learning.
The mural has banners with other quotes, stacks of books, and silhouettes of teens representing various emotions. The stars and the butterflies are metaphors. The butterflies were inspired by the book, “…I never saw another butterfly…,” with children’s drawings and poems from Terezin concentration camp. Acrylic medium, polymers and collage were used over a latex base with varnish to finish the work.
The mural is displayed at the Junior Department .For more information, contact Ms. Harrigan at 203-797-4505. The Danbury Library is located at 170 Main Street in Danbury, CT.
