Newtown Savings Bank champions the collection of food in drive
Those living at or below the poverty level in the greater Danbury and Newtown areas often do not know when their next meal may be. And the economic downturn has resulted in more people in our area struggling to make ends meet. Many who have never had to consider community support are turning to food pantries as a source to feed their families.
This year, as part of its annual Days of Caring event in June, 3,861 pounds of food were collected at 30 sites throughout region and distributed to local food banks and to the Salvation Army.
Newtown Savings Bank is a regular participant in the Days of Caring Food Drive. For the second year in a row, their branches collected the most food in the drive, representing almost half of all the food collected in the entire drive. Each year, the bank has an inter-departmental competition to see which department can bring in the most food in weight per person. This year, the Deposit Operations Department came in first place, collecting 37 pounds of food per person! A total of 1,800 pounds of food were collected at all of its branches.
