The WCSU Opera Ensemble will present “The Tender Land” by Aaron Copland at 8 p.m. on March 27 and 28, and 3 p.m. on March 29, in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the University’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Avenue Extension in Danbury. Copland’s folk opera is a Depression-era coming-of-age story about a young woman growing up in the American heartland. Full of soaring Copland melodies, including the well-known “The Promise of Living,” it is also laced with McCarthy era political references and jabs, which early audiences found shocking. “The Tender Land” premiered 60 years ago at the New York City Opera, directed by Jerome Robbins, with Thomas Schippers conducting. Directed by Margaret Astrup; Musical Direction by Fernando Jimenez. For tickets, go to www.wcsu.edu/tickets or call (203) 837-TIXX.
