Paying It Forward

‘Tis the season for giving. Every year, Alicia and I select a charity near and dear to our hearts and offer them a token of our appreciation. We hope our small contribution helps them continue to do what they do.
Well, as soon as we heard about this year’s Savings Bank of Danbury Spirit of Giving campaign we couldn’t wait to share it with all of you. It’s a bit of a treasure hunt. You find the treasure, then, pay it forward.
From December 1 through December 18, Savings Bank of Danbury employees will place 50+ envelopes containing $50 each in various locations throughout the towns surrounding its 14 branches. The bank encourages those who find an envelope to share the money with a friend, organization or even a stranger who may benefit from it.
Be on the lookout for envelopes with the Savings Bank of Danbury logo on the front and a sticker saying, “Open me.” Envelopes will be left randomly at businesses, parks, libraries, schools, senior centers and other locations. Each envelope will contain instructions to “pay it forward” by either donating the entire amount or keeping half and donating half. The instructions also ask the finder to tell The Savings Bank of Danbury how the cash was used at the bank’s Facebook page or by email to social@sbdanbury.com.
“I expect there are going to be a lot of good stories,” said Kathleen Romagnano, president and CEO of Savings Bank of Danbury. “Giving back to the community is a core value of Savings Bank of Danbury and has always been the foundation of our organization.”
Individuals who share their story by December 31 will be entered into a drawing to have $250 donated to the charity of their choice.
We plan to keep our eyes peeled during our downtown lunchtime walks. Maybe we’ll get lucky and our donation will be just a little bigger this year. And remember, there are many ways to give back, with money or with your time.
