Danbury Prospect Charter Would Improve Education Choices

As a former student of the Danbury Public School system and current community advocate and organizer, I am very concerned about the future of our schools. We have issues with overcrowding and racially unjust disciplinary practices. Right now, as school districts throughout the country face cuts, we must be open to any solution that will improve our schools. State Sen. Julie Kushner’s obstinate opposition to Danbury Prospect Charter School will only hurt our community.

Charter Schools Are Not A “Magic Bullet” to Improve Danbury Schools

With the safe reopening of schools on everyone’s mind, it is critical that we, as a community, examine Danbury’s public education in its entirety. Our schools have suffered from chronic underfunding by city leaders. Despite higher state funding per student than peer districts such as Norwalk or Stamford, Danbury spends one third less per pupil from municipal funds.

DPS Reopening to a Hybrid In-Person Learning Model

We will be reopening the schools with a hybrid, in-person learning model, beginning on Monday, October 26, for all grades K-12. Preschool is anticipated to return the following week and more information will be forthcoming.

Governor Ned Lamont announced that he is doubling funding for the previously announced rental assistance program for Connecticut residents impacted by COVID-19 from $10 million to $20 million. That program, which is funded by the Coronavirus Relief Fund managed by the Office of Policy and Management, provides payments to landlords on behalf of approved tenant applicants, is administered by the Connecticut Department of Housing in partnership with the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA) and 11 housing counseling agencies across the state.
