CT Residents Now Have a Free Gas Cylinder Recycling Program
Residents can drop off cylinders at transfer stations, recycling facilities, municipal events, and select state parks throughout the state.
Connecticut residents now have a convenient and free way to recycle small gas cylinders, thanks to The Cylinder Collective (TCC) — a nonprofit Producer Responsibility Organization created to manage the state’s first gas cylinder stewardship program.
Launched under Connecticut Public Act No. 22-27, effective October 1, 2025, the program partners with manufacturers, municipalities, and collection sites to offer safe and environmentally responsible recycling options.
Residents can drop off cylinders at transfer stations, recycling facilities, municipal events, and select state parks throughout the state. Participating towns include Bethel, Branford, Bridgewater, New Fairfield, Newtown, Ridgefield, and many more.
“This program makes it simple for residents to recycle their used gas cylinders safely and responsibly,” said David Keeling, executive director of The Cylinder Collective and the Pressurized Cylinder Industry Association. “It’s good for the environment, good for communities, and free for the public.”
Accepted items include small propane, helium, butane, isobutane, and propylene cylinders used for camping, cooking, DIY projects, and party balloons. 20-pound BBQ tanks can be exchanged at retail cages. Larger propane tanks and fire extinguishers are not included.
