June is bustin’ out all over, as the Rodgers and Hammerstein tune goes. The beautiful weather is here to stay! At least for a little while. The Danbury Senior Center and its programs for those over 60 are taking full advantage. In addition to many of our indoor programs here at Elmwood Hall, we’re moving outside for some very special programs.

Every Thursday from 10am-12pm, join us at the Rogers Park pickleball courts for some pickleball! What is pickleball, you might ask? Pickleball is a paddle sport, similar to tennis, in which two players or four players hit a perforated, hollow plastic ball with paddles over a net. Whether you have never played before or are a pickleball expert, we’d love for you to join us on the court. No entry fee, but you must bring your own pickleball paddle, as well as water to keep hydrated and have appropriate attire you can move in. Free to play, but members must sign up with the TeamReach app. Once the TeamReach app is downloaded, the group code is elmwood10. Sign up begins 24 hours before game day. Maximum number of players is 20. Beginners welcome!

Beginning Tuesday, June 9, the senior center will be having Food Truck Tuesdays! On select Tuesdays, from 11am-1pm, join us at Elmwood Hall as we will welcome food trucks to our parking lot, who will offer food for purchase. The June schedule is as follows – June 9 - Nomad Bites, June 16 – Brazilian Boys BBQ, June 23 – Greek Style Grill. In July, the schedule is as follows – July 7 – Taco Road Trip, July 14 – The Coop, July 21 – Brazilian Boys BBQ. Join us for some food truck fun. There will be a little something for everyone!

What would summer activities be without baseball? On Tuesday, June 30, we will welcome members of the Danbury Westerners baseball team to the senior center for a meet and greet. They will be on hand to chat with you and answer any questions you may have about professional baseball life. Those who attend will receive free tickets to a Westerners game.

If you are more of an indoor person, we have plenty for you as well! In addition to our regular everyday programs, we have a few special events coming up. First up, we will be welcoming Northwell Health for program on Stroke Prevention Thursday June 4, from 1-2pm. Join Northwell Health's (formerly Nuvance) Neuroscience Coordinator, Lauren Henriques (RN, MSN), for a presentation on stroke prevention. In this talk, Henriques will address the signs and symptoms of a stroke, who is at risk, what can be done to prevent a stroke, treatment options ,and so much more! Join us for an informative talk.

On Wednesday, June 10, the AARP returns with their annual Safe Driver Course. Refresh your driving skills, and you may save on your car insurance (please verify your discount with your insurance carrier). In this four-hour course, you will learn about skills and strategies you can use on the road every day. Discover defensive driving techniques to help you deal with aggressive drivers. This course is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members. Payment accepted via check made out to AARP. Sign up required. Sign up closes June 3. Open to CT Residents ONLY.
