Danbury Library Honored with Inaugural Excellence in Public Libraries Award for Accessibility and Inclusion

It specifically celebrates the library's innovative Sensory Space.
The Danbury Library has been honored with one of the inaugural 2025 Excellence in Public Libraries awards from the Connecticut State Library. This award recognizes the library's exceptional commitment to "Accessibility and Inclusion." It specifically celebrates the library's innovative Sensory Space, which opened on March 29, 2023, during the community's Autism Awareness Ceremony.
In 2018, Emanuela Palmares, a dedicated community partner, approached the library administration with a vision to create a dedicated space for patrons with autism and other sensory processing needs. At that time, no library in Connecticut had such a facility, positioning Danbury as a pioneer in the pursuit of inclusivity.
With the support of a state Construction Grant and generous contributions from the Friends of Danbury Library and the local community, the library embarked on a transformative renovation of its junior floor. The installation of semi-soundproof glass walls has created a tranquil environment that caters to the diverse sensory needs of its patrons. The library staff dedicated time to researching best practices and equipment to ensure the space promotes a calming atmosphere. It features adjustable lighting and a mix of active and passive interactions.
Since its inception, the Sensory Space has been a tremendous success, with more than 1,000 reservations made during the 2024-2025 fiscal year alone. Library staff continuously review and improve the space based on user feedback, ensuring that it remains inviting and functional for people of all ages. Additionally, the library has taken on a mentorship role, helping other public libraries that are interested in creating similar sensory spaces.
Library Director Katie Pearson expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stating, "Receiving the inaugural Excellence in Public Libraries Award for Accessibility and Inclusion is a profound honor, reflecting our unwavering commitment to ensuring everyone in Danbury feels welcome and has equitable access to knowledge and resources. This recognition inspires us to continue innovating and expanding our services, fostering a truly inclusive environment for all."
The Danbury Library is committed to its mission of accessibility and inclusion, aiming to be a community hub where everyone can explore, learn, and connect.
“Connecticut's libraries serve as models of innovation and community engagement. We are excited to honor the Danbury Library with this new award,” said Librarian Deborah Schander.
