Find Your Summer Community at Elmwood Hall

By Matthew Austin / Elderly Services Program Coordinator

Summer is in full swing, and the heat is officially here! Come on down to the Elmwood Hall Danbury Senior Center, where it’s not only cool, but you might make some friends along the way! We have programs and activities happening Monday through Friday to keep those dog days of summer occupied. Daily programs include Tai Chi, Chair Yoga, Line Dancing and Zumba. These and other programs will keep you moving all summer long.

Mondays consist of Tai Chi and our Movers and Shapers class. Tai Chi, taught by Susan Bradley, has proven to help reduce stress and improve concentration, balance, strength, and flexibility. Our Movers and Shapers class, taught by Coleen Krempel, consists of low-impact aerobics, strength training, and stretching. For those that like a slower pace, we have Quilting and Sewing Club on Monday mornings and Bridge Club in the afternoon.

On Tuesdays, we have a Chair Yoga class taught by Beverly Leighton, which focuses on relaxation, breathing, and gentle postures. Chair yoga for older adults can ease suffering caused by many ailments, including arthritis, chronic pain, and heart disease.

Wednesdays consist of Strength Training and Line Up & Dance. Coleen Krempel returns to lead Strength Training. This class helps you stay strong and maintain your muscles. One-to-three-pound dumbbells are suggested. Line Up & Dance is led by our Director Susan Tomanio and Kevin Burland. If traditional exercise isn’t your thing, come dance away and get some exercise. Susan and Kevin will lead you through the steps!

Beverly returns on Thursdays to teach Gentle Flow Yoga. This is a slightly higher intensity yoga class, which involves getting up and down off the floor. It is great exercise, and Beverly will modify the practice to your needs.

On Thursdays, we also have Pickleball. Every Thursday from 10am-12pm join us at the Rogers Park Pickleball Courts for some Pickleball! Please bring: your own Pickleball paddle, water for proper hydration, appropriate attire (clothes you can move in and court sneakers), and the willingness to learn and have fun! Members must sign up with the TeamReach app. Once the TeamReach app is downloaded, the group code is elmwood10. Sign up begins 24 hours before game day. Maximum number of players is 20. Beginners welcome!

Fridays bring Zumba with Coleen. She leads you through exercises and dance to popular music. Most exercise classes are only $2 each! What a bargain!
