Keep Moving All Summer Long at Elmwood Hall

Municipal Agent Tamires Dasilva & Director Susan Tomanio received an award from the Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging, naming Elmwood Hall Danbury Senior Center a Senior Focal Point for the State of Connecticut.
Summer is in full swing, and the heat is officially here! Come on down to the Elmwood Hall Danbury Senior Center, where it’s not only cool, but you might make some friends along the way! We have programs and activities happening Monday through Friday to keep those dog days of summer occupied. Daily programs include Tai Chi, Chair Yoga, Line Dancing and Zumba. These and other programs will keep you moving all summer long.
Mondays consist of our Walking Club, Tai Chi and our Covers and Shapers class. Join our Walking Club on Monday and Friday mornings at 9 am. Starting from the Danbury Senior Center, this group takes a walk through and around downtown Danbury. The Walking Club walks at a slow pace, but they do about 3 miles during each walk. All are welcome. Walking is the easiest and safest exercise. Grab your sneakers and join!
Tai Chi, taught by Susan Bradley, is proven to help reduce stress and improve concentration, balance, strength, and flexibility. Our Movers and Shapers class, taught by Coleen Krempel, consists of low-impact aerobics, strength training, and stretching.
On Tuesdays, we have Pickleball and Chair Yoga. Every Tuesday, from 10 am-12 pm, join us at the Rogers Park Pickleball Courts for some Pickleball! What is Pickleball, you might ask? Pickleball is a paddle sport, similar to Tennis, in which two players or four players hit a perforated, hollow plastic ball with paddles over a net. Whether you have never played before or are a Pickleball expert, we'd love for you to join us on the court. There is no entry fee, but you must bring your own Pickleball Paddle, as well as water to keep hydrated, and appropriate attire that you can move in.
Our Chair Yoga class, taught by Beverly Leighton, focuses on relaxation, breathing, and gentle postures. Chair yoga for older adults can ease suffering caused by many ailments, including arthritis, chronic pain, and heart disease.
Wednesdays consist of Strength Training and Line Up & Dance. Coleen Krempel returns to lead Strength Training. This class helps you stay strong and maintain your muscles. One- to three-pound dumbbells are suggested. Line Up & Dance is led by Director Susan Tomanio and Kevin Burland. If traditional exercise isn’t your thing, come dance away and get some exercise. Susan and Kevin will lead you through the steps!
Beverly returns on Thursdays to teach Gentle Flow Yoga. This is a slightly higher-intensity yoga class, which involves getting up and down from the floor. It is great exercise, and Beverly will modify to your needs.
For the Broadway fans, we have Broadway Burn, which is a Zumba-like class featuring exercise and dance to all your musical theater favorites. This class is led by Matthew Ames.
If Broadway isn’t your thing, Fridays bring Zumba with Coleen. She leads you through exercises and dance to popular music. Most exercise classes are only $2 each! What a bargain!
