Welcoming the Fall Season at the Danbury Senior Center

By Matthew Austin / Elderly Services Program Coordinator

As the summer winds down, the fun doesn’t have to stop. If you are over 60 years old, come join us at the Danbury Senior Center, where there is a little something for everyone.

If you are into exercise, we have daily exercise classes that include tai chi, chair yoga, strength training and our ever-popular Movers and Shapers Class. Movers and Shapers is a low-impact aerobic fitness class that is great for cardiovascular health. Strength training and abdominal work are added to this class for a total body workout. A chair and weights are needed. Our Movers and Shapers class has become so popular that we’ve had to add a second session! The first session runs on Mondays at 11:15am and the second session runs on Tuesdays at 9am, starting September 1. Both sessions are taught by Coleen Krempel.

In September, we are also holding our first Latin Dance Hour. On September 22, from 11:30am – 12:30pm, join members of the Danbury Senior Center staff for a fun, casual, no pressure dance party! No experience is necessary. Come and learn some salsa, merengue, bachata, tango and other dances! Or simply come and enjoy the music of Central and South America.

If relaxation is more your thing, we’ve added a new monthly program to help with stress and relaxation – a sound bath and meditation workshop. These workshops will be held on the second Monday of every month from 1:30 - 2:30pm. Join sound vibration therapy practitioner Jeanine Chayka of Inspired Vibration by JC for this introduction to sound bath healing. Jeanine will offer a short introduction to the principles and practices of sound healing, then lead participants on a guided meditation focused on pain relief, using tuning forks, drums, singing bowls, and other instruments. There is no physical contact during this program.

With fall upon us, we all know what that means – flu season! We will be partnering with the Danbury Health Department for two flu clinics, to be held on Thursday, October 1, from 12:30 - 2:30pm and Tuesday, October 6, from 9:30am - 12:30pm. Flu shots provided by Danbury Department of Health. Please bring your insurance cards. A high dose shot is optional. No appointment is needed!

For seniors, the fall also means Medicare Open Enrollment. On October 1,  at 10am, the Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging (WCAAA) will be joining us for a Medicare information session. This engaging information session will provide an overview of the Open Enrollment season, including what to consider, common pitfalls to avoid, and helpful tips to empower consumers in the decision-making process. In addition. If you need assistance or have any questions about Medicare Open Enrollment, please call the Danbury Senior Center for an appointment to speak with a CHOICES certified counselor who can assist you in choosing the right plan for you.
